Baitcast Fishing
should i get a round bait cast reel or a low profile baitcast reel for calico bass?
i wanted to know the cons and prows of these types of reels and i will be fishing fishing huntington flats during this summer when they are spaning ( release) 12 pound mono

The pros and cons:
the pros are that these reels mentioned above are light and the level wind makes them a little easier to use. The Garcia’s are inexpensive to purchase. if your JUST fishing the sandies and calicos, you can get away with these.
The cons are that fishing 12 pound is not ok on anything other than a private boat. While these reels may have close to the capacity you are looking for, they can be a little light.
Think of this, Drew. The current can be ripping in the summer. Can you see yourself fishing these reels with 6 ounces of weight?
Although you can target sand bass, there are other incidentals that you can easily catch that would, rather quickly, destroy these reels, either the spool would bend or the gears would break, others like caunltd could explain better how reels grenade under pressure.
An alternative to the bait casters are straight conventional reels. a popular example would be the Newell. I’m not a big fan of them, but you could fish with much more confidence in southern california waters with this type, which is a step up from the Penn’s. People step up from these all the time, and they can be bought used for a fair price locally, parts are pretty easy to come by.
