proto matrix rail vs slg?
I have a 2004 icd (indian creek designs) freestyle.
I have grown really attached to my freestyle, but ive had soooo many problems with it. i can only recall four times that the freestyle hasn’t screwed up at the field, out of the 60 times ive gone. so, i want to buy a new gun. i was looking for a cheap gun this time, i already paid $600 for freestyle, i wanted to try something cheaper, so i was looking at the proto matrix rail and the slg, i like both, my friend alreday has the pmr, and i heard the pmr sucks. i just wanted to ask which you think is better? what are the pros and cons of each? what features does one have that the other deosn’t? please answer any questions you know, thanks.
Everyone is going to have an opinion, especially the “fan boys” — you know the type, the person (usually a kid or teen) who thinks that whatever marker brand (ie. Smart Parts Ion) he owns is simply the best and everything else is junk.
The SLG is the entry level tourney-style paintball marker and the Matrix Rail (PMR) is mid-level, underneath the higher-end Matrix (PM8.) All three are Autococker threaded, so if you have a nice barrel or barrel kit that you used with your ICD, you’re in luck.
If you’re looking for an inexpensive marker that is reliable, accurate, and kicks some serious butt, then a PMR Special Edition ($285) is the way to go. It is about $35 more than a standard PMR ($250,) but you are getting over $120 worth of upgrades.
SLGs are reliable, accurate, and perform very well too. You can pick one up for under $200. The only upgrade that I would strongly recommend is replacing the stock feedneck (which uses a set of o-rings to secure a loader) with a clamping feedneck. Once you start adding additional upgrades, such as a new trigger, barrel, etc. you could easily spend as much money as a PMR or PMR Special Edition.

FYI… I own a PMR SE and a SLG and I am extremely happy with both… I also currently own a Planet Eclipse Ego ETek, ACI Maverick (older inexpensive pump,) Tippmann Pro-Lite (old school,) so it is safe to say that I do not care for one brand more than another. What I look for is a marker that is comfortable, reliable, accurate, and upgradeable.
