Ozark Trail

What The State Of Arkansas Is Like
A person visiting Arkansas will find that the various sections of the state look quite different. Stretching across the northern part of Arkansas are the Ozark Mountains, which have some very beautiful scenery. In the northwestern region is some of the most fertile farming land in the state. Here the farmers raise cattle, dairy products, and fruits in large quantities. Below the Ozark Mountains is a broad fertile valley, known as the Arkansas River Valley. Strangely enough, it contains several high mountain peaks.
Blue Mountain and Magazine Mountain, both about 2,900 feet, are the highest points in the state. These and other peaks to the south are part of the Ouachita Mountains. The people in this region mine the valuable coal and bauxite, and produce lumber and wood products on a large scale. More bauxite is produced in Arkansas than in any other state in the United States. This area has many gas wells from which natural gas flows. The only diamond deposits in the United States are found in these mountains. In the Ouachita Mountains there are many mineral and hot springs, which people visit for their health. The city of Hot Springs is one of the most popular health resorts in the United States. The largest section of Arkansas, more than half the state, is the Mississippi River Valley.
The Mississippi runs along the eastern boundary. This valley is extremely fertile for growing cotton, corn, rice, and sweet potatoes. The southeastern section looks like Louisiana, with great moss-covered trees and swamps. However, some of the largest forests are also in the Mississippi River Valley, as well as valuable oil fields. The climate of Arkansas is quite mild. Though the temperature can go as high as 100 degrees in the summer, cool breezes from the Gulf of Mexico relieve the heat. There is very little snow in winter, and cold weather seldom lasts more than a few days.
The average temperature in January is 41 degrees; in July it is about 80 degrees. One reason the farmers’ crops grow so well is because Arkansas gets a great deal of rain. The people have depended for a very long time on the rivers for transportation. The Mississippi, Arkansas, Red, and Ouachita Rivers carry products to the markets on large barges. These rivers were also the chief means of transportation for people before roads and railroads were built. However, today, Arkansas has over 4,300 miles of railroad; and good roads have replaced the rough wagon tracks and trails of the early days.
